MWUL 2008 NULITES Program Results

In 2008 we also provided services to a core group of 19 high school students – called our NULITES. NULITES stands for “National Urban League Incentives to Excel Succeed” and is a national program. The NULITES was initially funded by Nemours Health & Prevention Services as the Youth Leadership Council. The NULITES vote on, amend, and enforce their own charter which serves as a guide to students running their own programs. When assessing our impact:

100% reported that as a result of participation in NULITES they are better able to see themselves as leaders in their school and their community

95% reported they have increased knowledge on effective decision-making that can lead to healthy living and healthy lifestyles for teens and beyond

100% reported an interest in mentoring younger students in elementary or middle school

65% reported overall growth from their participation in workshops

43% desire increased engagement in youth leadership activities in their community and indicate they would recommend the program to other teens.

All of our NULITERS matriculated to the next grade at the end of the school; we anticipate our four seniors will matriculate to college in 2009.
Under economic development our DollarWi$e Program in partnership with Citigroup, the Delaware Money School, the US Conference of Mayors offered financial literacy workshops where 100% of attendees indicated that the information shared was valuable; 80% of workshop attendees indicated that they adopted new financial habits. One couple attending the financial literacy workshops purchased their first home within months of completing the series. Our series was their first participation in financial education workshops. They found the series invaluable in providing the resources, information and guidance they needed to purchase their first home. In partnership with the City of Wilmington and their public access station, we reached over 3600 people.
