NULITES/ Youth Leadership Council

The main purpose of NULITES is to promote and maintain high standards of well being, educational, character and leadership qualities. This is accomplished through its program goals, structure and required educational seminars and community service projects. Through NULITES the Urban League is able to carry out a vital component of the Campaign for African American Achievement, which is to provide caring and supportive adults in the lives of our urban youth who are in need of support. The purpose of the MWUL NULITES’ Youth Leadership Council is to provide youth a voice, vision, and guidance, while supporting the MWUL Achievement Matters! initiative.

The YLC provides students with a platform where they take responsibility for all aspects of decision-making, planning, and implementation of the program including operation of the council. This process reinforces the idea of ownership, allows youth the opportunity to voice their opinions, expectations and concerns on the issues that affect their lives, as well as gives them access to private and public resources that will help them meet their social, economic, and health needs. The program addresses the academic personal, and social needs of minority youth using the Project Ready College Preparation Curriculum which integrates academic preparation for college, life skills development, global and cultural awareness.

The mission of the YLC is to use the voice and visions of youth leaders to facilitate change in the community.

Participating youths are asked to uphold the Seven NULITES principles, which were created to teach young people the attributes that engender success. NULITES principles reinforce the positive development of youth as well as
encompass all levels of the human experience.

STRIVE for excellence at home, school and in my community.
WORK within my neighborhood to further its development.
RESPECT my mind and body as well as the mind and bodies of others.
CELEBRATE my heritage and culture as well as those of others.
CREATE a better future for my family, other people and myself.
CARE for the world's people and environment.
PROMOTE a universal spirit of cooperation and peace.

NULITERS students participate in bi-monthly meetings and weekly activities and events that develop leadership skills, have access to tutoring/mentoring, and participate in community activities that encourage civic engagement.

The NULITES’ Youth Leadership Council program targets up to 50 students ages 14-8 that live throughout New Castle County. The primary target are high school students who are referred through their high school principal, guidance office, local city or county council representative or an YLC member. In addition, students are recruited to participate through the efforts of the Coordinator.
