The Definition of a Guild.
A Guild is defined as any association for mutual aid and promotion of common interest.

In 1942, the first Urban League Guild was founded by Mrs. Mollie L. Moon in New York City. The activities undertaken by the Guild quickly caught the attention of the Urban League affiliates across the country. As a result, Guilds are now operation in more than 85 cities under the National Council of Urban League Guilds. The principle concerns of the Urban League Guilds are in the areas of interpretations, leadership development, and fund-raising. Originally established on an informal basis, the Guild later adopted by-laws and began holding annual elections and regular meetings.

In May 2004, efforts began to establish a Guild with the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League. On May 14, 2005, the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League Guild was officially accepted into the National Council of Urban League Guilds by the Eastern Regional Coordinator, Sandy Moon-Hightower.  On July 27, 2005, the Wilmington Guild was recognized and received its Charter Membership certificate at the National Urban League Conference. The Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League (MWUL) Guild became the 23rd member of the National Council of Urban League Guilds when it was chartered in July 2005 with 17 community service-oriented men and women.

It’s startup-began as the MWUL’s Membership Committee whose purpose was to provide a framework for increasing its affiliates’ diverse membership base. It also helped promote financial support through membership recruitment and fund-raising activities. Reflecting on the historic role Guilds play in support of Urban League affiliates, the MWUL President determined that the MWUL Guild would enhance the agency’s presence within the affiliate-wide movement, and serve the interests of the presidential office. As a result, the structure of the membership committee was incorporated with that of the National Council of Urban League Guilds.

Invitation
As an outreach entity, members of the MWUL Guild provide a variety of services, and programs to support the agency’s mission. To prepare for the changing economic forces that confront all non-profit organizations, the Guild continually seeks to build a solid group of volunteers. To better serve our community, we need to draw upon the skills, know-how, and ideas of individuals like you.

Mission
The Mission of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League’s (MWUL) Guild is to stimulate, develop and promote participation and leadership consistent with the goals and objectives of our affiliate.
Goals of the Guild

To make communities aware of the MWUL’s mission to enable people of color to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
To financially support the MWUL through major fund raising events and community projects.
